Education & Early Career
Prof Dara Kilmartin was awarded the Kirwan Medal in Ophthalmology at UCD as an undergraduate. He completed internships at Boston Medical Center, US, and St. Vincent’s University Hospital, Dublin. He also obtained first class honours in a Master’s degree in Physiology, focusing on eye movement research.
Surgical Training
He subsequently undertook basic and higher surgical training in Ophthalmology through both the Irish and Scottish training schemes, working across the Mater Hospital, Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital, St Vincent’s University Hospital, and Grampian University Hospitals in Aberdeen.
Fellowships & Research
Following the award of a Vision Research Training Fellowship from the Wellcome Trust (UK), he completed his first subspecialty fellowship in Uveitis and Medical Retina (1998–2000) under the supervision of Prof John Forrester and Prof Andrew Dick at the University of Aberdeen. This involved both clinical and basic science research into Sympathetic Ophthalmia, an archetypical example of eye autoimmune disease. He was also a Co-Investigator in the pivotal early TAP and VIP trials of photodynamic therapy for Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD).
He then completed further subspecialty fellowship training in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery with Prof Ian McAllister and Prof Ian Constable at the Royal Perth Hospital/Lions Eye Institute, Australia (2000–2002).
Current Roles & Appointments
Prof Kilmartin was appointed as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in 2002 and Clinical Associate Professor at UCD in 2018, working at the Royal Victoria Eye & Ear Hospital and the Beacon Hospital (since 2006).
Publications, Teaching & Research Leadership
He is the author of over 50 high impact peer reviewed scientific publications and three book chapters, and has trained over a dozen international vitreoretinal fellows. He is currently a Principal Investigator in the FaReal study of real world outcomes of Faricimab (Vabysmo, Roche) for wet AMD, based at the Beacon Hospital.
Clinical Expertise
In addition to complex cataract surgery, he performs retinal detachment, macular hole and epiretinal membrane surgery, and treats all aspects of AMD, diabetic retinopathy, retinovascular disorders, and uveitis/ocular inflammation.
Professional Memberships & Positions
Prof Kilmartin is the senior medical member of the Hospital Council (Board of Governors) of the Eye and Ear Hospital, appointed in 2009. He is a past Honorary Secretary on the executive board of the International Uveitis Study Group and represents Ireland on the board of the British and Eire Association of Vitreo-Retinal Surgeons (BEAVRS).
