About
Professor Damato completed his undergraduate training in Malta, where he was born. He then received his postgraduate training in Glasgow where he specialised in ophthalmology
and ocular oncology. In 1993, he moved to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, where he established the ocular oncology service, which he directed until 2013. Following this, he was invited to the University of California, where he directed the ocular oncology service until 2018. He is now clinical lead for the Ocular Oncology Service at Oxford Eye Hospital, having established a diagnostic service there.
He has published around 300 articles in peer-reviewed journals as well as numerous textbook chapters and several textbooks in ocular oncology. He has served as President of the European Ophthalmic Oncology Group, the European Vision and Eye Research Association and the International Society of Ocular Oncology. Professor Damato has received numerous awards in several countries as well as Honorary Fellowships with the Ophthalmological Society of Alberta and the College of Optometrists, UK.
