Informazioni
Dr. Aruna Arujuna is a Cardiac Electrophysiologist and Devices Specialist and serves as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King's College London.
His interests lie in a holistic approach to treating heart rhythm disorders, particularly Atrial Fibrillation, the significance of Imaging in Electrophysiology, and advanced pacing techniques.
At Bristol Medical School, Dr. Arujuna focused on Cardiovascular Medicine, earning Merits in both the Molecular and Cellular Basis of Medicine and Cardiovascular Medicine. During his electives, he gained experience at the University of Washington’s Vascular Biology Lab under Professor Steven Schwartz, where he worked on classifying atherosclerotic plaques and measuring fibrous cap thickness for a research associate.
After finishing Medical School, Dr. Arujuna began his junior doctor training at The Royal Devon & Exeter NHS Foundation Trust in Exeter, rotating through various specialties in a Golden Rotation at a single site. He achieved membership in the Royal College of Physicians before relocating to London to pursue a research position focused on Cardiac MRI and Electrophysiology.
As King's College London was developing its Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences Division, Dr. Arujuna joined this emerging research area. Collaborating with MRI physicists, software developers, scientists, clinical cardiologists, and electrophysiologists, he contributed to several projects, including robotic catheter ablation, artificial intelligence in decision support for CMR analysis, and Echo-Fluoro Overlay Hybrid Imaging. This period was fruitful, leading to numerous abstract presentations, publications, and a robust professional network nationally and internationally.
Dr. Arujuna's training in Electrophysiology and Cardiology began at Guy’s & St Thomas’ during the clinical research phase and continued in the West Midlands, providing further procedural exposure, complemented by observerships in Leipzig and Lisbon. To deepen his understanding of the autonomic nervous system and arrhythmias, he visited the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA).
Throughout his career, Dr. Arujuna has stayed connected with technological advancements. He is proficient with Abbott's Mapping Tool, Biosense Webster's Carto, and Boston Scientific's Rhythmia Mapping, and is skilled in single-shot ablation devices and leadless pacemaker implants. He has a particular interest in image-guided ablation, emphasizing the integration of multi-modality imaging before and during procedures, especially using Intra-Cardiac Echo (ICE) when appropriate. He also enjoys discussing the role of the autonomic nervous system and how lifestyle factors like diet, exercise, and mindfulness can influence regulation.
Outside of clinical practice, Dr. Arujuna is a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society (FHRS), Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC), Fellow of the American College of Cardiology (FACC) and Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP). He serves on the Heart Rhythm Society Committee Board (2021-2025) and was previously an External Committee Member for the Air Pollution Sub-Committee Group of the World Heart Federation (2021-2022).
In his role as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at King's College London School of Biomedical Engineering & Imaging Sciences, Dr. Arujuna remains passionate about teaching and research, supervising PhD candidates and Electrophysiology Fellows at his current institution.
He champions a personalized approach to patient care, leveraging cutting-edge technology that continually advances the field of heart rhythm management, enhancing accuracy, safety, and patient outcomes, while also enriching the overall patient experience.
Each patient's experience with arrhythmias is unique. By addressing individual features and concerns with empathy, he guides clinical decision-making, recognizing the complexities and transformative impact of living with an arrhythmia.
