À propos
Dr. Yash Gawarikar is the founder and director of the Canberra Region Neurology and Pain Centre (CRNPC) and has played a pivotal role in advancing stroke care in the region. He established the stroke service at Calvary Public Hospital in 2013, serving as its director until 2022, and is currently a Visiting Medical Officer (VMO) at Calvary Bruce Private Hospital.
Dr. Gawarikar graduated from the University of Mumbai in 1999, followed by a three-year postgraduate degree in Medicine. He later completed his Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP) and advanced training in neurology in Newcastle and Canberra. His expertise in stroke care was further refined through a Stroke Fellowship at John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle, where he trained under world-renowned stroke experts, Professor Chris Levi and Professor Mark Parsons. Since beginning his role as a consultant neurologist in Canberra in 2011, Dr. Gawarikar successfully established the Acute Stroke Unit and Service at Calvary Public Hospital in 2014.
In private practice at Calvary Private Hospital since 2012, Dr. Gawarikar has specialised in treating a wide range of neurological conditions, including stroke, Parkinson's disease and movement disorders, multiple sclerosis, peripheral neuropathy, muscle disorders, functional neurological disorders, dizziness and vestibular disorders, and dementia.
He is actively engaged in the neurology community as a member of the Australia and New Zealand Association of Neurologists (ANZAN), the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), and the World Stroke Organization (WSO). His commitment to stroke care extends to his involvement with the Australasian Stroke Trials Network (ASTN) and his role as a principal investigator for multiple clinical trials at Calvary Hospital. Dr. Gawarikar has contributed significantly to stroke research and the restructuring of acute stroke services in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), serving as Chair of the ACT Stroke Working Group and as a committee member of the Stroke Society of Australasia. He also served as an advisor for the Australasian Stroke Academy.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Gawarikar is a Senior Clinical Lecturer in neurology at the Australian National University (ANU) Medical School. He is deeply involved in medical education, training medical undergraduates, basic physician trainees, and neurology advanced trainees. His contributions to developing curricula and course content have further solidified his role as a leader in the field of neurology.
