Dr UKD Ajith Goonetilleke is a GMC (UK) licensed Consultant Neurologist with over 25 years of experience. He completed his medical degree at St Thomas’s Hospital Medical School in London in 1985 and became certified as a specialist in neurology with the General Medical Council (UK) in 1998. He is a Member Association of British Neurologists and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology.
Dr Goonetilleke has trained and worked in prestigious neuroscience centres, including the Institute of Neurology and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, Charing Cross and Westminster Hospitals, and Regional Neurosciences Centres in Newcastle and Manchester.
For 11 years, Dr Goonetilleke served as a Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Neurology in Newcastle, before relocating to the UAE in 2009. In the UAE, he was the Chief of Neurology at Mafraq Hospital from 2009 till 2019. He was also the Chair of Medicine, and the Chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeuttics Committee (PTC), from 2010 till 2019. In 2019 Dr Goonetilleke was chiefly responsible for moving the Neurology and Neurophysiology Departments from Mafraq Hospital to Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City (SSMC), a new 760-bedded hospital jointly operated by the Mayo Clinic (US) and SEHA (Goverment Healthcare Provider in Abu Dhabi). At SSMC he was the Chief of Neurology, and the Chair of the SSMC PTC. Dr Goonetilleke has also been the Chair of the SEHA PTC from 2013 till 2021. In 2021 Dr Goonetilleke became the Head of the Department of Neurology at Burjeel Medical City. In August 2023 Dr Goonetilleke moved to Dubai, where he is currently working as a full-time Consultant Neurologist.
Dr Goonetilleke's expertise extends to clinical leadership and managerial roles, reflecting his commitment to advancing neurological care. He has also published numerous articles and chapters in international peer-reviewed journals and books, and has presented at national and international conferences.
His clinical focus encompasses a wide spectrum, including neuromuscular disorders, headaches, epilepsy, cerebrovascular disorders, movement disorders (including Parkinson’s disease), cognitive disorders (including Alzheimer’s disease), neuro-immunological and paraneoplastic disorders, dizziness, vestibular disorders, and advanced neurophysiological techniques.
