À propos
Dr Rahim Khan is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Advanced Endoscopist at Mater Private Network in Dublin. He offers expert care across a broad range of gastrointestinal conditions, with particular focus on advanced therapeutic endoscopy, hepatology, and hepato-pancreato-biliary medicine. His clinical expertise includes colonoscopy, gastroscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), and the endoscopic treatment of bile duct stones, gastrointestinal bleeding, and digestive diseases affecting the liver, gallbladder and pancreas. He also provides specialist care for patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), coeliac disease, and other functional or structural GI concerns. Patients can access investigations quickly through the Direct Access Endoscopy Clinic at Mater Private.
Dr Khan completed his medical degree with honours in 2008 in Pakistan and was awarded a Gold Medal by the university for academic distinction. Following graduation, he moved to Ireland and undertook Basic Specialist Training in general medicine at University Hospital Galway, accredited by the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. During this time, he completed a Master of Science in Clinical Research at NUI Galway, where he focused his research on the use of Infliximab in treating inflammatory bowel disease. After completing his training, he remained at the university as a senior lecturer in gastroenterology.
He progressed to the Higher Specialist Training programme in gastroenterology through the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. As part of this five-year programme, he worked at several major Dublin hospitals, including St James’s Hospital, Tallaght Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. On completion, he was awarded the Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training (CSCST), which he considers his most significant professional achievement to date.
In order to expand his expertise in complex endoscopic procedures, Dr Khan undertook a fellowship in advanced therapeutic endoscopy in England, where he gained hands-on experience in high-complexity interventions including ERCP, EUS, polypectomy, gastrointestinal stenting, and bleeding therapy. He was subsequently appointed as a consultant gastroenterologist at the same NHS trust and led the local hepato-pancreato-biliary service.
In 2023, Dr Khan returned to Ireland and joined Mater Private Network, motivated by strong personal and family ties. He is now the only full-time private consultant in Ireland currently performing ERCP, and he has introduced a same-day ERCP service at the hospital, helping patients access timely, minimally invasive treatment with shorter recovery times and reduced hospital stays.
Dr Khan is actively involved in research and has published articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the British Medical Journal. His academic interests include advanced endoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease, coeliac disease, and the endoscopic treatment of bile duct stones. He was appointed regional lead by NHS England for the National Upper GI Bleed Audit, which remains ongoing. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, the Irish Society of Gastroenterology, the British Society of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He also holds JAG certification as an endoscopist in the UK.
