Professor Leyva-León has been a Consultant Cardiologist since 2000 and is currently based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, one of the UK’s largest teaching hospitals. Alongside his NHS role, he holds a Professorship in Cardiology at Aston University Medical School, where he leads internationally recognised research programmes.

His clinical practice covers the full spectrum of general cardiology, including angina, heart attacks, hypertension, and raised cholesterol. He has particular specialist expertise in heart failure, cardiomyopathies, and cardiac rhythm disorders (arrhythmias). Professor Leyva-León is also a national pioneer of cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) and has extensive experience in advanced cardiac device therapy, including pacemakers and implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).

A recognised authority in cardiac imaging, he specialises in echocardiography, cardiovascular magnetic resonance (cardiac MRI), and cardiac computed tomography (cardiac CT), using these modalities to support precise diagnosis and personalised treatment planning.

Professor Leyva-León has played a major role in shaping national and international cardiology practice. He is Past President of the British Society of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and has served as a Clinical Advisor to National Institute for Health and Care Excellence on national guidelines for heart failure, cardiac devices, and drug therapy. He has also contributed to European Society of Cardiology guideline committees for heart failure and pacing.

He has over 400 research publications and abstracts and more than 300 invited lectures delivered worldwide. His research focuses on cardiac devices, electrophysiology, cardiomyopathies, heart failure, imaging, and clinical outcomes, undertaken collaboratively at Aston University and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

In addition to his NHS work, Professor Leyva-León sees patients privately at Little Aston Hospital, The Priory Hospital and The Harborne Hospital in Birmingham, and teh One Heart Clinic in Solihull. He is known for his thorough, evidence-based, and patient-centred approach to care.
