About

Dr Paolo Giuffrida is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, where he works across Barnet Hospital and Chase Farm Hospital. He graduated from the University of Pavia and Ghislieri College in 2012.

Early in his career, he undertook research at Queen Mary University of London, focusing on mucosal immunology in inflammatory bowel disease and coeliac disease. He then returned to Italy to complete his specialist gastroenterology training at Fondazione IRCCS San Matteo in collaboration with the University of Milan, where he was involved in multiple phase II and III clinical trials for inflammatory bowel disease.

Dr Giuffrida later completed a PhD investigating small bowel adenocarcinoma associated with Crohn’s disease and coeliac disease, publishing several peer-reviewed papers in this area. During this time, he also contributed to research at the UCL Institute for Liver and Digestive Health, where he worked on developing 3D extracellular matrix models of human bowel.

Following his PhD, he returned to the UK and worked as a Gastroenterology Specialist Registrar at St Mark’s Hospital, a leading centre for intestinal and colorectal disorders, and later as an endoscopy quality improvement fellow at Homerton University Hospital. He was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in 2021 and has since led the inflammatory bowel disease service for two years. His clinical work includes outpatient clinics and elective endoscopy at Chase Farm Hospital, as well as inpatient and emergency gastrointestinal care at Barnet Hospital.

Alongside his clinical work, Dr Giuffrida is an active academic with over 60 peer-reviewed publications, more than 1,900 citations, and an h-index of 28. His research interests include inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal fibrosis, and gastrointestinal malignancies. He has contributed to international conferences such as United European Gastroenterology Week and has served as a guest editor for the journal Cancers.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
