Dr Agalawatta is an adult psychiatrist who earned their medical degree from the University of Newcastle. Dr Agalawatta completed placements throughout the Hunter New England region during their studies. Following junior medical training on the Central Coast, Dr Agalawatta began specialist training with the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP). Dr Agalawatta became interested in perinatal psychiatry during their advanced training and worked for 12 months at a Sydney specialist Mother and Baby Unit.
Dr Agalawatta was able to work with women who were experiencing fertility issues in this capacity. They were able to broaden their knowledge of perinatal psychiatry's unique facets, such as mother-infant attachment and psychiatric drug prescribing during pregnancy and postpartum. Dr Agalawatta was awarded Fellowship of the RANZCP and a Master of Psychiatry after completing their training, and they are now employed as a staff specialist at Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Hospital. Dr Agalawatta is also interested in psychiatry's non-clinical aspects.
They are a former member of the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry Trainee Advisory Board and a current member of the Mental Health Review Tribunal of New South Wales. Dr Agalawatta provides personalised, evidence-based care using pharmacological and psychological approaches, underpinned by an emphasis on healthy lifestyle. Dr Agalawatta sees patients from the ages of 18-60 years of age.
