Ms Emma Stapleton

Emma Stapleton is a Consultant ENT Surgeon based at Manchester Royal Infirmary, where she serves as the lead surgeon and clinical lead for the Manchester Cochlear Implant Programme. She is recognised as one of the UK’s leading sub-specialist ear surgeons, with a high-volume practice focused on complex ear conditions. Her surgical expertise covers a wide spectrum of ear disorders, including hearing loss, tinnitus, and advanced hearing implant procedures such as cochlear implants, middle ear implants, and bone conduction devices. She is also highly experienced in procedures including stapedectomy for otosclerosis, tympanoplasty and myringoplasty (eardrum repair), ossiculoplasty, and cholesteatoma surgery. In addition, she runs a specialist dizziness and balance service in collaboration with audiology colleagues and frequently receives referrals for second opinions and revision surgery. Appointed as a Consultant in 2018, Ms Stapleton graduated from University of Edinburgh in 2000 and completed extensive fellowship training in sub-specialist ear surgery across the UK and internationally, including in Glasgow, Manchester, the USA, Canada, and Australia. Her research interests include hearing loss, cochlear implantation, ear infections, deaf awareness, and surgical mentorship. She is a highly regarded educator and leader in her field, regularly teaching and lecturing both nationally and internationally. She serves as a Regional Surgical Adviser for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is actively involved in multiple professional organisations, including as President of the North of England Otolaryngology Society and former Chair of Women in ENT (WENTS UK), where she led a national mentoring programme. Ms Stapleton is widely published, contributes to several editorial boards, and is a Director and Trustee of the Journal of Laryngology and Otology, as well as a Trustee of The TWJ Foundation. Her contributions to clinical care, education, and research have been recognised with an NHS National Clinical Excellence Award. In 2022, she was awarded the prestigious Hunter-Doig Medal by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in recognition of her outstanding career achievements and potential.
