Mr
Mr Michael Stellakis
General Surgery
About
Mr. Stellakis qualified in 1991 from the University of Bristol, before training at a number of medical institutes in London, Strasbourg, and Paris. He then went on to complete a fellowship on Laparoscopic Bowel Surgery at Frimley Park Hospital in 2004.
He has a vast experience in laparoscopic (keyhole) and endoscopic surgery and is one of only 57 Consultant Surgeons in the UK who made up part of the national training programme allowed to train other consultants in advanced keyhole techniques for removing bowel cancers. Mr Stellakis set up from scratch the keyhole bowel cancer service at Warwick hospital, lead the implementation of the state of the art operating suite and pioneered these surgical techniques in the Midlands. He has trained numerous fellows, junior surgeons and consultants.
He also treats benign diseases of the bowel including irritable bowel syndrome. He is a skilled diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopist (having performed over 6000 of these procedures). His resuylts are audited every three months. His comfort and patient satisfaction scores are excellent.
Mr Stellakis has a specific interest in keyhole repair of hernias, colonoscopies and sports groin injuries. He has developed the Warwickshire Hernia Centre that specialises in all types of abdominal hernia surgery including recurrent and complex hernias. He is one of the few UK surgeons who has performed over 2500 TEP laparoscopic hernia repairs with excellent audited results. This technique, whilst more complex to perform than other keyhole or open repairs, affords the patient less pain and scarring and quicker recovery whilst being safer than other techniques. Overall Mr Stellakis has completed over 9000 laparoscopic and endoscopic procedures.
Mr Stellakis was Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee at Nuffield Health Warwickshire Hospital (a position he has held for 7 years) and was the lead for endoscopy. He lead the endoscopy unit during its successful campaign to gain national accreditation (JAG). Nuffield Health Warwickshire was the second private hospital to have achieved this.
