Mr Burwell was a consultant at the Royal United Hospital, Bath until 2022 and held an honorary consultant appointment at the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases, Bath where he ran the specialist hip clinic for 23 years. This allowed Mr Burwell to develop expertise in the management of patients with many different types of hip problems.
Mr Burwell has worked in independent practice since May 2022. Mr Burwell practices at Sulis Hospital and the Bath Clinic (Circle Bath Hospital).
Mr Burwell graduated from the University of London in 1988 and undertook specialist surgical training in Orthopaedics and Trauma on the North West Thames Rotation based at the Royal Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. Mr Burwell completed his final year of training in the UK at the highly specialist Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital at Stanmore, Middlesex.
Mr Burwell then spent a year at the University of Adelaide in South Australia, before taking up his consultant appointment in Bath, undertaking advanced training in Adult Hip suregry and reconstruction as the Arthroplasty Fellow and Clinical Lecturer to Professor Don Howie.
For over 25 years as a Consultant Orthopaedic surgeon Mr Burwell has gained expertise in all forms of Adult Hip reconstruction and joint replacement surgery, including the use of cemented and uncemented hip replacement implants and modern materials such as ceramic bearings. During his NHS appointment Mr Burwell developed wide experience of hip resurfacing and revision hip replacement surgery.
Mr Burwell continued with clinical research as a consultant including being part of the team in the development and clinical introduction of the Furlong Evolution uncemented femoral stem by JRI, a Sheffield-based orthopaedic company.
