À propos
Mr Laurence Stewart is a highly experienced Consultant Urological Surgeon, specialising in female and reconstructive urology. He graduated from Aberdeen University Medical School in 1982 and went on to train in urology in Aberdeen and Belfast, before completing advanced subspecialty training in Cardiff, Christchurch (New Zealand), and Duke University (North Carolina, USA).
Appointed as a Consultant Urological Surgeon in Edinburgh in 1996, Mr Stewart has been at the forefront of innovation in urological practice. He pioneered the introduction of botulinum toxin (Botox) for urinary incontinence in Edinburgh and has helped establish a wide range of reconstructive treatments for both male and female patients.
His research career began as a Fellow in Belfast, where he completed an MD thesis on bladder cancer in 1994. Since then, he has published extensively on a variety of urological topics and is the author of the urology chapter in Principles and Practice of Surgery and co-author of the kidney and genito-urinary chapter in Davidson’s Principles and Practice of Medicine.
From 1998 to 2007, Mr Stewart served as Lead Clinician for Urology in Edinburgh, during which time he helped establish minimal access surgery, promoted laser prostatectomy, and championed the role of specialist physiotherapy in urinary incontinence.
Beyond clinical practice, Mr Stewart remains actively engaged in research, education, and leadership. He is the convener of the Core Skills in Urology course at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and currently serves as Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the International Continence Society.
Recognising the importance of holistic patient care, he was also a founding member of the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, where he has served as both Trustee and Treasurer.
