General Surgery
About
I provide specialist care to both private and NHS patients who have problems relating to the gallbladder, pancreas and liver across Leicestershire , Northamptonshire , Rutland and its surrounding counties.
I specialise in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery for gallstones (cholecystectomy) and perform over 400 gallbladder operations annually. I am a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) for liver, pancreas and gallbladder cancers in Leicester, I also carry out major laparoscopic and open liver and pancreas surgery, predominantly for cancer. I have carried out over 10,000 gallbladder operations and over 500 liver and pancreas cancer operations.
Other interests include management of benign conditions such as liver and pancreatic cysts. I also specialise in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures such as Endoscopic Ultrasound Scans (EUS).
I have also worked with centres across Europe to help pioneer Robotic HPB Surgery in Leicester.
I have published in peer reviewed journals on various topics including gallbladder surgery, laparoscopic bile duct exploration, acute pancreatitis, colorectal liver metastases, pancreatic cancer surgery in the elderly and pancreatoduodenal trauma. Further to this, I have presented at over a hundred national and international meetings.
I practice at the Nuffield Health Leicester, Spire Leicester, Woodland Hospital (Kettering) and Blakeland Hospitals (Milton Keynes) where I consult every week.
History and Background
I had the opportunity for diverse training in Europe, India, Africa and North America. After completing my basic and specialist surgical training in Manchester, I undertook Specialist Fellowships in Hepatobiliary Surgery and Transplantation in Leeds and Cambridge before being appointed as a Consultant Surgeon at the University Hospitals of Leicester. More recently I have visited several specialist centres across Europe to bring robotic surgery to liver and pancreatic patients of Leicester.
Gallbladder surgery
I specialise in gallbladder surgery and perform over 400 gallbladder operations a year. I specialise in providing surgery for gallstones but additionally look after complex gallbladder problems referred to myself from across the region. I also treat patients who have had complications from gallbladder surgery carried out elsewhere.
I started and run the ‘Hot Gallbladder Service‘ at Leicester Hospitals which allows for rapid surgery in patients with gallstone problems following a hospital admission with cholecystitis and/or pancreatitis.
I also run a private ‘Rapid Access Gallbladder Clinic’ at the Woodland, Nuffield, Spire and Blakeland Hospitals where patients with gallbladder problems can: be assessed; a management plan formed and if needed given a date for surgery, in a one-stop clinic.
Pancreatic surgery
I specialise in pancreatic cancer surgery, and provide private and NHS care for patients from across East Midlands. I carry out Laparoscopic (keyhole) and open surgery for pancreatic cancer. I have a special interest in managing locally advanced pancreatic cancer patients.
I also carry out pancreatic interventions like drainage of pancreatic pseudocysts and assessment of pancreatic tumours using the endoscopic ultrasound. I am due to start offering Robotic Pancreatic Surgery at Leicester's hospitals.
Liver surgery
I specialise in liver surgery for both benign and cancerous conditions. I operate on patients with primary liver and bile duct tumours (hepatocellular carcinoma, Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, adenoma etc) and secondary liver tumours (liver metastases from primaries in the bowel or other organs).
I have a special interest in treating complex patients with multiple liver tumours with techniques that include 2-stage liver surgery and microwave ablation to try improve prognosis and lengthen life expectancy for these patients.
Microwave ablation of liver tumours
I specialise in carrying out microwave ablation (destroying tumour cells using heat from microwaves) of liver tumours to help make previously inoperable disease operable and in patients with widespread neuroendocrine tumours, to improve prognosis and survival.
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)and EUS guided Radiofrequency Ablation of Tumours
I am the current Lead for the Endoscopic Ultrasound Service at Leicester, and specialise in carrying out EUS to diagnose and biopsy pancreatic, liver and bile duct cancers, provide pain relief (coeliac plexus blocks), drain pancreatic pseudocysts and carry out pancreatic necrosectomy. I also provide therapeutic intervention like radiofrequency ablation of tumours in patients who are unable to have major pancreatic surgery.
Neuroendocrine Tumours
I am the current Head of the Leicester Neuroendocrine Tumour Service (LNETS). I specialise in operating on patients with neuroendocrine tumours (NETS) of the small bowel, pancreas and liver. This includes providing curative surgery and also debulking surgery (surgery to reduce tumour burden) to improve prognosis and survival. I am the Chair of the Regional Neuroendocrine Tumour MDT (Multi-disciplinary team) and work with a number of other NET specialists in providing high quality but evidence based care for these patients.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
