About Dr Michael James Browning
Dr Mike Browning has been a consultant since 1999, having qualified MBBS from St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School in 1988. He initially trained in cardiac surgery before pursuing his intended career in anaesthesia and intensive care. His early training took place at the Magill Department of Anaesthesia at The Westminster, Charing Cross, and Chelsea and Westminster Hospitals, before completing his higher specialist training at St Bartholomew’s and The Royal London Hospitals. This included experience with the London HEMS and a fellowship year at Great Ormond Street Hospital. An early adopter of total intravenous anaesthesia (TIVA), he has been a longstanding advocate for EEG-based sleep monitoring during anaesthesia. Dr Browning is passionately committed to patient choice and shared decision-making. He was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 1994 and is also a Fellow of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. He is a founding member of the Perioperative Exercise Testing and Training Society (POETTS) and a recognised trainer and mentor in Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing (CPET). He established his CPET service in 2007—one of only eight such services in the UK at that time—and has since performed over 6,000 tests. He remains actively involved in collaborative research in this field and was awarded the prestigious John Farndon Prize in 2017. Dr Browning recently completed a major research collaboration exploring the impact of exercise training on outcomes in oesophageal cancer (the PReEMPT trial). This work has led to several new projects investigating the role of exercise prehabilitation, alongside research into the cellular and molecular mechanisms that appear to enhance response to cancer therapies. In his clinical role, Dr Browning is a Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist, and Lead for Perioperative Medicine, with a particular interest in prehabilitation and the management of high-risk surgical patients. He has played an active role in developing enhanced recovery pathways and advancing immediate perioperative care following major surgery. Alongside his clinical work, Dr Browning is a dedicated educator. He is the Year 3 Lead for the Perioperative Medicine course at Kent and Medway Medical School and serves as a Clinical Academic Tutor.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
