About Dr Mark Whitsey
Dr Mark Whitsey is a Consultant Geriatrician (MBChB, MRCP (London), PGDip) with a specialist interest in the health and well-being of older adults. He is particularly passionate about supporting people living with frailty and improving how emergency and urgent healthcare is delivered to the frailest members of the population. Dr Whitsey graduated from the University of Birmingham in 2009, with an MBChB in Medicine, and completed his postgraduate training in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine in the West Midlands, finishing his specialist training in 2019. He has undertaken a Clinical Fellowship at Wolverhampton New Cross Hospital and holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Medicine (Specialty Medicine) from the University of Wolverhampton, also completed in 2019. In his NHS practice, Dr Whitsey leads an Acute Frailty service, focusing on early identification and tailored treatment for older people who come to hospital unwell or in crisis. He also runs a weekly Older Adult Movement Disorder clinic, caring for people with Parkinson’s disease, Parkinsonism and tremor. In addition, he provides inpatient Geriatric and General Internal Medicine services, including ward-based care, specialist reviews for other hospital teams and participation in the acute unselected medical take. Dr Whitsey takes a holistic approach to the care of his patients and strives to reach a shared understanding with them of their concerns, the issues affecting their health, and the most appropriate management plan. He takes a holistic and patient-centred approach, aiming to be empathetic and approachable, and takes time to ensure that patients and their families feel listened to and involved in decisions about their care. He regularly sees older adults living with frailty, those at risk of falls and people experiencing acute confusion or delirium. He has particular expertise in Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment – a detailed, holistic review that looks at: • medical issues • memory and mood • mobility • medications • social support His key clinical interests include frailty, Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders in older adults, tremor, falls, and acute confusion/delirium. Dr Whitsey lives in Birmingham with his wife and two children and enjoys an active family life. He plays cricket and golf for local clubs and values staying active and maintaining balance – principles he also encourages in his patients.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
