Mr Kirk Stephenson is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in inherited and acquired disorders of the retina, vitreous and choroid. Mr Stephenson graduated with honours from University College Dublin in 2010 and undertook comprehensive ophthalmic surgical training through the Irish College of Ophthalmologists and the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. He holds two postgraduate research degrees in inherited retinal disease.
Following specialist training in Ireland, Mr Stephenson completed three years of high-level international subspecialty fellowship training in Canada. At the University of British Columbia he gained advanced expertise in medical and surgical retina, uveitis, ophthalmic oncology and ocular genetics, before undertaking a further fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, focusing on paediatric retinal disease, inherited retinal degenerations and visual electrophysiology.
Mr Stephenson’s clinical expertise spans the full spectrum of vitreoretinal disease, including retinal detachment, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, macular hole and epiretinal membrane surgery, cataract surgery, and complex paediatric retinal disorders. His practice integrates cutting-edge retinal imaging, electrophysiology and genetic evaluation to deliver highly specialised, patient-centred care. He is particularly experienced in managing rare eye conditions and optimising therapeutic pathways for children and adults with inherited retinal diseases.
Mr Stephenson has authored more than sixty peer-reviewed publications and has acted as a reviewer for over one hundred scientific papers across twenty-five journals. He has presented internationally, contributed as a co-investigator on clinical trials in Ireland and Canada, and has secured more than €150,000 in competitive research funding. He remains deeply engaged in teaching and mentorship, helping train the next generation of ophthalmologists and retina specialists.
Mr Stephenson is an active member of numerous professional societies including the Irish College of Ophthalmologists, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, ARVO, the International Society for Genetic Eye Disease and Retinoblastoma, the Canadian Ophthalmological Society and the European Reference Network for Rare Eye Diseases (ERN-EYE).
