About

Mr Jonathan Evans is a Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon at Nottingham University Hospital, where he was appointed in 2020. He qualified in medicine from the University of Liverpool in 2006 and completed higher surgical training in general surgery in the West Midlands. He was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2019 and subsequently undertook a specialist fellowship at Nottingham University Hospital.

His clinical practice encompasses colorectal and general surgery, with subspecialist interests in inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, complex abdominal wall reconstruction and neuroendocrine tumours of the bowel. He is trained in both laparoscopic and open surgical techniques and manages a wide range of colorectal conditions, including hernia repair and common proctological disorders such as anal fissures, fistulae and haemorrhoids. He established the abdominal wall reconstruction service at Nottingham University Hospital and initiated a dedicated multidisciplinary team meeting and the use of adjunctive techniques such as pre-operative botulinum toxin injections for complex incisional hernias. He sits on the abdominal wall committee of the ACPGBI.

Mr Evans is a high-volume endoscopist with a focus on colonoscopy and is completing training as a bowel cancer screening endoscopist. He is actively involved in teaching colonoscopy skills courses.

His academic background includes a research-based PhD completed in 2016 at the University of Liverpool, examining chemotherapy response in colorectal cancer. His research won the John of Ardene medal and Wesleyan prizes at the Royal Society of Medicine.

He is an Honorary Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Nottingham and holds leadership roles within endoscopy services, with a focus on clinical governance and patient safety.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
