About Dr John O'Donnell
Dr O’Donnell is a highly experienced Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, widely regarded as one of the pioneers of hip arthroscopy. Graduating from the University of Melbourne in 1977, he completed his orthopaedic training in 1985 before furthering his studies in the UK, France, and Austria. Returning to Melbourne, he began working at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital. Initially focusing on shoulder surgery, particularly arthroscopic techniques, Dr O’Donnell’s expertise in this area laid the groundwork for his groundbreaking work in hip arthroscopy, a field in which he has been a leading figure since 1990. With over 5,000 hip arthroscopies performed, Dr O'Donnell is one of the world’s most experienced in this procedure. His commitment to advancing the field extends beyond patient care to education; he runs a Fellowship program in hip arthroscopy and training courses for surgeons. He is a founding member of the International Society for Hip Arthroscopy and serves as the current Editorial Secretary. In addition to his clinical and educational roles, Dr O'Donnell has also trained in the minimally invasive AMIS hip replacement technique in Paris, and is a sought-after speaker internationally.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
