He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) from Murcia University (Spain, 1988) before receiving his training in General Surgery in Granada (Spain, 1990-1995), and subsequently earned a Doctorate (PhD) from Complutense University, Madrid (Spain, 1998). His commitment to professional development is evident in his completion of numerous advanced qualifications, including post-doctoral training in general and digestive surgery, certifications in bariatric and metabolic surgery and advanced trauma life support (ATLS). Additionally, he holds a Master's degree in Medical Direction and Health Care Management, and an Expert’s qualification in Clinical Units Management (Spain, 2005). Moreover, he is a fully trained robotic surgeon (certified DaVinci console surgeon).
Dr. Picazo further honed his expertise through specialised training at world-renowned institutions such as MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas (USA), and the European Pancreas Center at University Hospital in Heidelberg (Germany), focusing on pancreatic diseases.
Dr. Picazo began his practice in 1995 at Mancha-Centro Universitary Hospital in Spain, where he served in various capacities, including Attendant Surgeon, Head of the Abdominal Wall Unit, Chairman of the Teaching Commission and Board Member of the Spanish Committee for Abdominal Wall Surgery. In 2006, he obtained the national position as Vice-Chairman of Surgery.
In addition to his work in Spain, Dr. Picazo has practiced internationally, serving as a Consultant General Surgeon at a leading hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, before joining Burjeel Medical City in 2022.
Dr. Picazo is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and Fellow of the European Board of General Surgery (FEBS, Honorary). He is also a member of several prestigious professional organizations, including the European Hernia Society (EHS-GREPA), the European Association of Endoscopic Surgery (EAES), and the Spanish Surgical Association (AEC).
