About Dr Shanthi Paramothayan
Dr Shanthi Paramothayan is a Consultant Respiratory Physician with extensive experience in managing a wide range of respiratory conditions. She now works in private practice, seeing both insured and self-pay patients. Her clinical work includes the assessment and management of patients with persistent cough, breathlessness, asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung disease, sarcoidosis, recurrent chest infections, and sleep-related breathing disorders. She performs bronchoscopy and takes bronchial lavage. She trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, University of London, graduating with distinction, and completed specialist respiratory training at several major London hospitals, including the Royal Brompton. She completed a PhD at the University of Cambridge and later undertook postgraduate training in medical law and medical education. She worked for more than three decades in the NHS, including substantive consultant posts at Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust and Medway NHS Foundation Trust, where she held roles such as Lead for Sleep Services, Lead for COPD, Lead for Lung Cancer, Foundation Training Programme Director, Director of Medical Education, and Associate Medical Director for Education. She has long-standing involvement in academic and educational work and has held positions as Honorary Senior Lecturer at St George’s Medical School and Senior Lecturer at Kent and Medway Medical School. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians, and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has published extensively, including systematic reviews, and is the author of the textbook Essential Respiratory Medicine, published in 2018. She is currently working on the second edition of this textbook.
