About

Dr Roberto Verdolini MD, FRCP, is a member of the British Association of

Dermatologists and a fully accredited Consultant in Dermatology on the British

Specialist Register of the GMC. He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of

Physicians, and a Member of both the American Academy of Dermatology and the

European Academy of Dermato-Venereology.

His National Health Service appointment is with the Princess Alexandra Hospital

Trust, Harlow, Bishop's Stortford and Epping, having transferred there, in early 2010, from the

Barts and the London Hospital NHS Trust.

After qualification in Ancona, Italy, in 1993 with honours, early medical posts

were in General Pathology, where he gained a deep insight into histopathology

of the skin, biology of tumours and laboratory research.

Specialist training in Dermatology was completed in 1999 qualifying with Honours and Publicetur. A further period of training was subsequently undertaken at the Royal London Hospital, from 2000

to 2001, under the guidance of Professor R. Cerio.

His first Consultant appointment was with the Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust

in Harlow, Essex in 2002. He was subsequently appointed as Consultant Dermatologist at Newham University Hospital, London, in 2003 where he provided general dermatology clinics but also specialist services for Skin Cancer, including a very popular Rapid Access Surgical Dermatology Service based on the ‘see and treat' principle. When the Dermatology Department in Newham merged with the Barts and the London Hospital NHS Trust's Dermatology unit, in October

2007, he took on responsibility for skin cancer and dermatological surgery at

both sites. In 2010 he returned to the Princess Alexandra Hospital Trust, as Lead Clinician in Dermatology. Under his direction, the department has expanded, delivering all the various aspects of a modern and dynamic dermatology service including narrow-band phototherapy,

photo-dynamic therapy, ionthophoresis, dermoscopy, dermatologic surgery which

includes Mohs', and onco-dermatology (delivered in the context of a very active MDT). Botulin A toxin, DMARDs, Biologics and retinoids clinics are also provided.

In 2012 he was appointed Clinical

Service Group Lead for Medicine, leading not only Dermatology but also

Neurology, Endocrinology and Diabetes, Rheumatology and Gastroenterology. He kept

the position for 5 years. During his tenure all these specialities flourished and become financially viable and stable and waiting lists were well under control.

Specialist clinical interests include the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer (including melanoma) for which he performs a wide range of surgical as well as non-surgical treatments.

Other areas of special interest include immune-bullous diseases and their

treatment, treatment with immunosuppressants and biologics, dermato-pathology,

acne, hyperhidrosis, hidradenitis suppurativa, lichen sclerosus, the non surgical

treatment of vitiligo and hair loss. He carries out the full range of medical treatments for both male and female pattern alopecias and autoimmune forms of hair loss.

He has published dozens of papers in international, peer reviewed medical

journals, presented and lectured at international conferences including the

American Academy of Dermatology, the European Academy of Dermato-Venereology

and the British Association of Dermatologists meeting and authored chapters in

medical books. For the past 7 years has been a regular contributor in delivering medical education and teaching at Sharjah University, UAE.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
