About Dr John Gerard Coghlan
Dr Gerry Coghlan is a Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Free Hospital and the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth. He specialises in General and Interventional cardiology and has a clinical interest in heart failure, pulmonary hypertension and arrhythmias. He studied medicine at University College Dublin, then went on to specialise in cardiology at the National Cardiac Centre (Baggot Street) Dublin, Harefield Hospital and The Royal Free Hospital. In 1997 he was appointed consultant cardiologist at the Royal Free Hospital. He is a founding member of the National Pulmonary Hypertension Physicians Association and has developed the Royal Free National Pulmonary Hypertension Service. He has a particular interest in connective tissue disease associated pulmonary hypertension. Dr Coglan developed an ‘outreach' model for pulmonary hypertension care and attended clinics at Guys & St Thomas' Hospital, Kings College Hospital, Royal United Hospital Bath, Derriford Hospital Plymouth, Queen Alexandra Hospital Portsmouth and Ulster Hospital Dundonald. In 1999 he was made clinical lead in cardiology with the Regional Health Authority and also lead for the North Central Sector collaborative program from 2002 to 2004. He was also medical chair of the North Central Sector Cardiac Network from August 2004 to 2013. In 2001 he was made Head of Service for medical specialties in the Royal Free Hospital, clinical director of acute medical specialties from July 2004 and Deputy Director for medical specialties from 2005 to 2009. With the advent of UCL partners he is now leading a group to co-ordinate pulmonary hypertension services & research across four hospitals linked to UCL. He is cardiology lead for the BAMS (BA in medical sciences) course at the Royal Free Site. He is also currently governance lead for the Cardiology Service at the Royal Free Hospital. Mr Coghland has published over 100 papers and has been included in multinational studies. His research interests include pulmonary hypertension, cardiac imaging and ischaemic heart disease.
