About Dr James Thing

Offers • Face-to-face consultations • Video and telephone consultations About me I am a Consultant in Sport & Exercise Medicine with over 10 years' experience helping patients recover from injury, manage joint pain, and stay active at every stage of life. After training at Imperial College School of Medicine, I qualified as a GP before completing four years of specialist training to become a Sport, Exercise and Musculoskeletal Medicine Consultant in 2014. Since then, I have combined elite-level sports medicine with a busy clinical practice for patients of all backgrounds. I worked as a Sports Doctor at the London 2012 Olympics, and I currently work pitch-side for Harlequins Rugby and as British Athletics Event Lead Doctor, co-ordinating care for international athletics competitions including the Diamond League, Anniversary Games and Indoor Grand Prix. Alongside my elite work, I enjoy supporting amateur sportspeople, recreational runners, and patients looking to stay active despite arthritis or long-term joint problems. Specialist expertise Ultrasound-guided diagnosis and injections - Founder and Clinical lead at The Joint Injection Clinic (Golders Green, Notting Hill & Henley-on-Thames). Arthritis management - non-surgical treatment for knee, hip, shoulder, hand & wrist arthritis (including steroid, hyaluronic acid, PRP and Arthrosamid injections). Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) - specialist in hydrodilatation/high-volume injection technique for patients with tight, restricted frozen shoulder issues. Tendon disorders - Achilles, patellar, plantar fasciitis, tennis/golfer's elbow. Sports injury care from sprains and ligament injuries to overuse problems and rehabilitation. My approach My goal is to provide rapid access to accurate diagnosis and effective treatment so you can return to the activities you love. I take a holistic, evidence-based approach, combining advanced imaging, targeted injections, and rehabilitation to achieve the best outcomes. I have performed tens of thousands of ultrasound-guided injections, with consistently high patient outcomes. Many of my patients are referred by word-of-mouth, physiotherapists, and fellow doctors including GP's and orthopaedic surgeons. Research & publications Published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Contributor to national guidelines on Exertional Heat Stroke Associate Editor, British Journal of Sport & Exercise Medicine (BJSM) Personal I'm a keen runner and have completed 13 marathons (PB 3:29). More recently I have switched to Peloton which allows me to remain fit and healthy. This personal experience gives me a unique understanding of how important it is for patients to be able to recover quickly and return to the activities they love. Conditions I treat Arthritis of the knee, hip, shoulder, hand & wrist Frozen shoulder & rotator cuff problems Tendon problems (Achilles, patellar, plantar fasciitis, tennis/golfer's elbow) Ligament and overuse injuries Carpal tunnel, trigger finger, De Quervain's tenosynovitis Rugby, athletics & running injuries Areas of interest Achilles tendinopathy Acromio-clavicular joint injury (ACJ) Adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder) Anterior cruciate ligament; injury Carpal tunnel syndrome De Quervain's tenosynovitis Degenerative meniscal tears Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound Frozen shoulder Golfer's elbow Hand, wrist and elbow sports injuries Hand/wrist arthritis Hip arthritis Knee arthritis Knee collateral ligament injury Musculoskeletal medicine Non-surgical treatment of osteoarthritis Patellar tendinopathy Peroneal tendinopathy Plantar fasciitis Rugby and Athletics Medicine Shoulder impingement (rotator cuff related pain) Sport and Exercise Medicine Tennis elbow Tibialis posterior tendinopathy Trigger finger Ultrasound guided injections
