About Dr Ian Purcell
I studied at Edinburgh School of Medicine gaining a first-class honours BSc in medical science before graduating with MB ChB honours in 1990. My general medical training leading to MRCP (UK) was in Edinburgh and Newcastle. I started specialist training in cardiology in Newcastle in 1993 then moved to London to take up a BHF Research Fellowship at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College. I was awarded an MD in 1999. I completed specialist cardiology training in London at the Royal Brompton and St George's Hospitals. I was appointed to my current post in general and interventional cardiology at Freeman Hospital, Newcastle in 2002. I served as clinical director for cardiothoracic medicine in Newcastle Hospitals from 2007-2018. I was appointed to the clinical lead post for the North East England and North Cumbria cardiac network in 2020. I am a member of the British Cardiovascular Society national clinical standards and practice committee.
