Dr Anthony Downs
Dermatology
About
A highly experienced dermatologist with particular expertise in the management of skin cancer. For 13 years was the lead clinician and chair of a multi-disciplinary team that treated patients with skin cancer in Devon (a skin cancer hot-spot of the UK). He pioneered the use of dermoscopy in the UK since 1999 and has been involved in a number of melanoma and other skin cancer clinical trials. This experience has given him particular expertise in providing complete care for patients with skin cancer. Given his position, he regularly trains other dermatologists, nurses and GP in advanced skin surgery of skin cancer and dermoscopy.
Dr Downs other main interest is in the management of psoriasis, for which he has gained a national and international reputation. He has lectured on the subject in different countries and contributed to a number of key publications.
He has been the clinical director of the regional NHS and private laser service at Exeter since 2001 and contributed to innovations in laser techniques over that time. This has allowed him to develop a comprehensive knowledge of laser treatments and also a varied cosmetic practice.
His NHS practice now fuses a community-led service across extended areas of Devon, Dorset and Somerset.
