About A/Prof Daniel Moon
A/Prof Daniel Moon is a highly respected urologist with internationally recognised expertise in robotic surgery for prostate and kidney cancer. He is an Associate Professor at The University of Melbourne, previously served as Director of Robotic Surgery at Epworth Healthcare from 2012 to 2017, and now serves as the Chair of Robotic Surgery at Cabrini Hospital. A/Prof Moon has played a pioneering role in the development of robotic urological surgery in Australia. He was the first Victorian surgeon to perform more than 2,000 robotic procedures and has led multiple national “firsts” in the field. These include publishing the first Australian series of laparoscopic radical prostatectomy in 2008, performing the first Australian robotic cysto-prostatectomy in 2009, and publishing the largest Australian pyeloplasty series in 2011. He went on to establish the robotic partial nephrectomy program at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, publishing the first Australian series in 2014 and subsequently the largest national series in 2018. In 2025, he was involved in the Australian launch of single-port robotic surgery, performing the first single-port robotic partial nephrectomy in the Southern Hemisphere. A/Prof Moon is a regular contributor to national and international scientific meetings and has been deeply involved in surgical education and training. He convened Australia’s first robotic surgical masterclasses in prostate cancer (2011), kidney cancer (2012), and multidisciplinary robotic surgery (2013). He has developed comprehensive training and credentialing frameworks for surgeons learning robotic techniques, is actively involved in fellowship training, and has served on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Urology International. Beyond cancer surgery, A/Prof Moon has a strong focus on helping men regain quality of life following prostate cancer treatment. He has developed a high-volume urological prosthetics practice aimed at restoring continence and sexual function. He co-authored the first multicentre Australian series of suburethral male slings, published the largest Australian series of artificial urinary sphincter implantation in 2014, and later the largest Australian experience in penile implant surgery for erectile dysfunction in 2017.
