Mr Damien Tucker is a UK-trained Consultant Trauma and Upper Limb Surgeon based in Bristol. He practices at Southmead Hospital, a Major Trauma Centre within North Bristol NHS Trust, and Practice Plus Group Emersons Green. He specialises in upper limb surgery, including shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand conditions, alongside complex orthopaedic trauma.
His practice is characterised by advanced subspecialist training, international experience, academic engagement, and a strong commitment to service improvement and patient-centred care.
Mr Tucker graduated with distinction from the University of Cape Town (MBChB, 2007) before relocating to the UK to pursue specialist orthopaedic training. He completed his MD at the University of Bristol in 2018, focusing on cellular biology and regenerative potential of bone marrow–derived mesenchymal stem cells. He subsequently achieved FRCS (Tr & Orth) in 2020 and was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in 2021.
His higher surgical training was undertaken in the Severn Deanery, followed by prestigious fellowship appointments in Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Hand and Wrist Surgery, and Major Trauma. He completed an international Upper Limb and Trauma Fellowship at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in Perth, Australia, gaining extensive experience in arthroscopic and reconstructive shoulder and elbow surgery as well as complex upper limb trauma.
He later undertook dedicated Trauma and Hand Fellowships at Southmead Hospital and Bristol Royal Infirmary, refining his expertise in complex elbow instability, wrist arthroplasty, carpal instability, trapeziometacarpal procedures, and advanced trauma management.
In addition to his clinical work, Mr Tucker maintains a strong academic and leadership portfolio. He has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, many as first or second author, and has presented at national and international conferences. His research spans regenerative medicine, surgical autonomy, implant positioning and outcomes in shoulder arthroplasty. He has received several awards and grants, including research funding and presentation prizes at international meetings.
Mr Tucker is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Bristol and has played an active role in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education. He is committed to service improvement, having led numerous audits and quality improvement initiatives, including pathways for shoulder injuries, paediatric trauma referrals, and enhanced recovery protocols. His leadership training includes the BOA Future Leaders Programme.
Having trained and worked across South Africa, the UK, and Australia, Mr Tucker brings a broad international perspective to patient care. He is dedicated to delivering evidence-based, compassionate, and high-quality orthopaedic treatment tailored to each patient’s needs.
