Professor Smith graduated with commendation in medicine from the University of Glasgow in 1997. After completing training in the West of Scotland and New Zealand, Professor Smith was appointed Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. A Fellow and Senior Examiner at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, Professor Smith is deeply committed to education and training. Their dedication to advancing respiratory medicine is evident from their role as a former member of the Evidence Review Group for the SIGN/British Thoracic Society National Asthma Guideline and as Chair of the West of Scotland Difficult Asthma Group. Professor Smith also chairs the Lanarkshire Respiratory Service Improvement Group. Their academic achievements include a highly commended PhD in respiratory medicine, with key publications in esteemed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. Professor Smith's research focuses on innovative asthma diagnostics and management, and they are Chief/Principal Investigator in clinical trials involving asthma, COPD, and chronic cough.
