About

Mr Amit Vats is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising in complex trauma, lower limb reconstruction, knee joint preservation and lower limb joint replacement surgery. He practises at Runnymede Hospital in Chertsey and at the Syon Clinic in Brentford, both of which are part of Circle Health Group.

He completed his orthopaedic training at the major trauma and orthopaedic centre at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in Scotland. Following this, he undertook post-FRCS fellowships under Mr Mark Blyth and Mr Angus Maclean, developing advanced expertise in knee arthroplasty, corrective osteotomies, kneecap alignment, arthroscopic knee surgery including cartilage repair and ligament reconstruction, as well as the use of circular frames for fracture management and limb deformity correction.

Mr Vats is actively engaged in teaching and academic work. He tutors knee modules on the University of Edinburgh MCh Orthopaedics course and his PhD research at Imperial College London focused on improving surgical safety within the NHS. He piloted the World Health Organisation’s surgical checklist in the UK, adapting it for NHS use, and this checklist has since become mandatory in all UK surgeries. He continues to lead initiatives that integrate research and patient safety measures into routine practice, with the aim of improving patient care pathways.

His clinical interests include partial and total knee replacement, hip replacement, knee joint preservation and alignment surgery, and complex trauma and lower limb reconstruction.

He is a member of the British Medical Association, the Medical Defence Union and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
