About

Dr. Peter MacCallum is a senior lecturer in haematology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, Queen Mary University of London, and an honorary consultant haematologist at Barts Health NHS Trust in London. He has served as Head of Clinical and Laboratory Haematology since 2004.

Dr. MacCallum qualified in medicine from the University of Sheffield and trained in haematology in Manchester and London. He was an MRC Clinical Fellow based at St Bartholomew’s School of Medicine before being appointed to his current role in 1995. Since 1996, he has also been the clinical lead for thrombosis and anticoagulant services.

Dr. MacCallum has been a Principal Investigator in several trials of new oral anticoagulants for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation and in the management of venous thromboembolism. He is the Chief Investigator of the UK-wide ORANGE study, examining outcomes of major bleeding in anticoagulated patients, and serves as the UK Chief Investigator for the GARFIELD-VTE study, a global cohort study on long-term outcomes of patients with newly diagnosed venous thromboembolism.

He has been involved in the development of national guidelines for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists on the prevention of venous thromboembolism during pregnancy and the puerperium, and has co-authored numerous papers and research in the field of thrombosis. His work includes studies on travel-related thrombosis, thrombotic markers in pregnancy-related issues, and fibrinolytic activation in trauma patients. Additionally, Dr. MacCallum has contributed as a reviewer for NICE clinical guidelines and has served as a specialist member of both the NICE Diagnostic Advisory Committee and the NICE Technology Appraisal Committee.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
