About Mr Niraj Mandal

Mr Niraj Mandal is a well experienced Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Cathedral Eye Clinic specialising in refractive lens exchange, cornea, and cataract surgery. He earned his medical degree from the University of Birmingham in 2009, during which he conducted an undergraduate research elective at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, USA. He later completed a seven-year residency at the London School of Ophthalmology and was awarded his Royal College of Ophthalmologists Refraction Certificate in 2014. In 2016, Mr Mandal became a Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology and the Royal College of Ophthalmologists. He obtained his Certificate of Laser Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists in 2023 and holds a postgraduate diploma in cataract and refractive surgery. He is also a Fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery.  Mr Mandal has practiced at Queens Hospital Essex and the Western Eye Hospital in London, where he served as a Senior House Officer Ophthalmologist. His journey continued as a Specialist Registrar Ophthalmologist at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London, followed by fellowships in Cornea and Cataract Surgery at the same institution. In 2019, he completed a Refractive Surgery Fellowship on Harley Street in London, gaining extensive experience with over 1000 LASIK and PRK surgeries, as well as 1000 refractive lens exchange surgeries. Mr Mandal pursued a fourth fellowship in complex cornea and cataract surgery at Vancouver General Hospital, University of British Columbia, where he holds a specialist licence to practice. Alongside his clinical work, Mr Mandal is passionate about training and supervising his knowledge to junior surgeons. He also serves at the Khmer Sight Foundation, participating in three missions to Cambodia. There, he collaborated with international doctors, local optometrists, medical students, and junior ophthalmologists to provide eye care in underserved communities. The team also conducted training sessions for local healthcare professionals and performed challenging eye surgeries at the hospital in Phnom Penh. Mr Mandal has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and has presented at international events, including the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons Congress, the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Annual Scientific Meetings, and the Canadian Ophthalmology Society.
