About

Dr. Kevin Shields is a Consultant Neurologist with a particular focus on the diagnosis and management of headache disorders. He holds appointments at The National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, Queen Square and the Whittington Hospital, where he delivers expert care across a broad spectrum of neurological conditions. One of the few neurologists also qualified in neurophysiology, Dr. Shields brings a rare dual expertise to his practice, enabling him to apply advanced diagnostic techniques in the study of the nervous system’s electrical activity.

Dr. Shields graduated first in his class from Trinity College, Dublin in 1997, earning the prestigious Hudson Gold Medal. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland in 1999 before moving to London to pursue neurology training at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. During this time, he worked under the mentorship of Professor Peter J. Goadsby, a world-leading authority in the field of headache disorders. His commitment to advancing neurological research led him to complete a PhD at the University of London in 2005, focusing on the mechanisms of pain transmission in headache. His work earned him the Sir Charles Symonds Prize from the Association of British Neurologists and the Lord Adrian Prize from the British Society of Clinical Neurophysiology.

In his clinical role, Dr. Shields combines cutting-edge research with compassionate, patient-centred care. While his primary subspecialty is in headache medicine, he has extensive experience managing a wide range of neurological disorders, including epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis, mirroring his broad practice within the NHS.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
