About

Mr Benjamin Tan is a Consultant Surgeon specialising in Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, where he has been part of the team since January 2017. Alongside this he also practices privately at the Priory Hospital and Harborne Hospital in Birmingham.

He graduated with an MBChB from the University of Glasgow in 2003 and in 2012, Mr Tan earned his MD from the University of Edinburgh. His work on cancer cachexia has been published extensively in medical journals. He completed his specialist surgical training in general and upper GI surgery in the East Midlands, receiving his Fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in 2014 and his Certificate of Completion of Training in 2016.

Before joining Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Mr Tan completed an advanced oesophago-gastric fellowship at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge. He is skilled in both laparoscopic and open surgical techniques, focusing on complex oesophago-gastric conditions such as gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, hiatal hernias, and cancers of the oesophagus and stomach.

Alongside his clinical practice, Mr Tan contributes to surgical education by teaching online for the University of Edinburgh’s Masters of Surgical Sciences programme. He maintains an active research interest in nutrition and body composition and their impact on outcomes following oesophago-gastric cancer surgery.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
