Professor El-Missiry completed training in the UK at Guy's and St Thomas' and King's College. They became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2004 and were elected as a fellow in 2020. Professor El-Missiry earned their international addiction medicine competence degree in 2005 and was awarded a fellow of the International Society of Addiction Medicine in 2015 and the American Psychiatric Association in 2017.
Professor El-Missiry is currently a psychiatry professor at the World Health Organization Collaborative Centre for Training and Research. They are also the principal investigator for several national and international research projects.
