About A/Prof Walid Barto
A/Prof Walid Barto is a highly skilled colorectal surgeon with expertise in general surgery, colorectal surgery, and advanced procedures such as colorectal robotic surgery, colonoscopy, and gastroscopy. He earned his medical degree from the University of Sydney and began his surgical training at John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. Completing his general surgical training at St Vincent's Hospital, he was granted Fellowship by the Royal Australasian College in 2009. A/Prof Barto furthered his training in colorectal surgery at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne and Westmead Hospital in 2010 as a fellow of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand. Throughout his career, he has focused his research interests on advanced laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery, laparoscopic hernia surgery, and trans-anal endoscopic micro-surgery (TEMS). His contributions include publications on modern surgical instrument design and a patent for a new laparoscopic instrument. Currently, A/Prof Barto holds appointments at the Sydney Adventist Hospital, Nepean Public and Private Hospitals, Blue Mountains Hospital, Norwest Private Hospital and Macquarie University Hospital. He serves as the Head of Robotic Surgery at Nepean Private Hospital. Dr Barto has been pioneering joint gynaecological/colorectal surgeries for intestinal endometriosis since 2012 at the Sydney Adventist Hospital. Notably, he led a groundbreaking collaborative surgery in October 2019, utilising high-resolution ultrasound technology, which was live-streamed to other gynaecological surgeons—an Australian first. In addition to his clinical practice, A/Prof Barto is actively involved in academic and educational pursuits. He is an Associate Lecturer at the University of New South Wales and a Lecturer at the University of Sydney. Furthermore, he serves as a senior lecturer at the Australian National University and is a proctor for Da Vinci Robotic Surgery.
