Dr Taffy Makaya is a Senior Consultant in Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes and Clinical Lead for Paediatric and Transition Endocrinology at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. She also practises at Nuffield Health Oxford Hospital. She trained in paediatrics and endocrinology at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where she developed specialist expertise in managing complex endocrine disorders in children and adolescents.
Her clinical interests cover a wide range of conditions, including early and delayed puberty, tall and short stature, adrenal disorders, thyroid disease, polycystic ovary syndrome, vitamin D deficiency, osteopenia, Turner syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, and type 2 diabetes. She also has a focus on weight management support and paediatric endocrine medicines.
Alongside her clinical work, Dr Makaya contributes extensively to teaching and research. She is an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford, delivering education to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and she supervises trainees as a Clinical and Educational Supervisor. She has authored multiple publications in leading peer-reviewed journals and regularly presents at national and international conferences. She is also an experienced medico-legal expert and appraiser.
Dr Makaya has held senior leadership roles within the NHS, including Clinical Lead for Paediatric Diabetes and Lead for the Freedom to Speak Up service, where she advanced open communication and patient-centred service development. Her leadership has supported award-winning teams and driven the implementation of service improvements in paediatric endocrinology.
Outside her clinical and academic commitments, she supports mental health causes and serves as Vice Chair of Oxfordshire Mind.
She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (FRCPCH) and a member of the British Society of Paediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes (BSPED) and the European Society of Paediatric Endocrinology (ESPE).
