Dr Sharmalar Rajendran is a Consultant Cardiologist based in South Australia and Director of Western HeartCare. She also works as a Senior Interventional Cardiologist at Lyell McEwin Hospital and practises privately at Western Hospital and Calvary Adelaide.
Dr Rajendran obtained her medical degree with Honours from the University of Sydney in 1997 under a university scholarship. She completed her cardiology training in 2004 and later completed a doctorate focused on platelet and endothelial function in 2009. Her interventional cardiology training included experience at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, as well as Prince Charles Hospital and Gold Coast Hospital in Queensland.
Her clinical interests include acute and elective radial coronary interventions, coronary imaging and functional testing. She specialises in interventional cardiology and the management of cardiovascular disease, alongside general cardiology care.
Alongside her clinical practice, Dr Rajendran is actively involved in research, teaching and medical education. She is an Educational Advisor for the Royal College of Physicians and teaches doctors in training at multiple levels. She has participated in national and international clinical trials as both an investigator and research supervisor, particularly in areas including microvascular angina and sleep-disordered breathing.
Dr Rajendran has presented research at international scientific meetings, including the Samuel A Levine Young Investigator Award, and has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in cardiology and cardiovascular medicine.
