Tariq Aslam is both a Consultant Ophthalmologist and well-respected Professor Of Ophthalmology and Interface Technologies at the University of Manchester. He specialises in the management of medical retinal disease, including diabetes, macular degeneration and central chorioretinopathy
Tariq Aslam graduated with a first degree from Oxford University and completed his training as an eye surgeon in Manchester and Edinburgh before undergoing a fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital. Professor Aslam has earned two doctorate degrees, the first from Oxford University and a more recent PhD from Heriot Watt University for research into interface technologies and computer programming. For this he was awarded the esteemed University MacFarlane prize as well as a Professorship at Heriot Watt. His research explores clinical ophthalmology and interfacing technologies, including image analysis, and developing devices using artificial intelligence. His research has led to multiple technologies with clinical applications, various patents and a spin-out company that develops medical software with the ulterior motive of creative positive social impact.
Professor Aslam's work is regularly published in medical journals and he is the Editor of "Eye News" and "Ophthalmology and Therapy " and Associate Editor of "Acta Ophthalmologica." He also leads the Manchester MSc course in Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science and the Manchester undergraduate ocular disease course.
