Professor Rahul Kanegaonkar is a Consultant Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon based at the Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham. He also leads the Multidisciplinary Balance Team at the Royal London Hospital.

Professor Kanegaonkar studied medicine at University College London, graduating in 1995. During his time at medical school he was awarded the Maurice Elton Prize in Oncology and the FMR Walshe Prize in Neurology in recognition of his academic achievements.

He completed his Basic Surgical Training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London and was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1999. He subsequently completed a Diploma in Laryngology and Otology in 2000 before securing a Higher Surgical Training post on the South Thames rotation. As part of his specialist training, he spent a year as a Fellow at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, gaining valuable experience in neurological aspects of ear and balance disorders. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery in 2006 and received his Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training in 2007.

Professor Kanegaonkar has a particular specialist interest in dizziness, vertigo and balance disorders. Earlier in his career, at Medway Maritime Hospital, he established a ‘One-Stop’ balance service to streamline the diagnosis and management of patients with complex balance conditions. He later worked as a Consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, where he was a key member of the Multidisciplinary Balance Team. The clinic’s work in diagnosing and treating dizziness and balance problems was featured on the BBC Radio 4 programme Case Notes.

Alongside his clinical practice, Professor Kanegaonkar is actively involved in medical research and innovation. He has developed a surgical technique for the treatment of cholesteatoma, a form of chronic ear disease, designed to preserve functional hearing. He has also developed a treatment approach for Ménière’s disease that may have the potential to significantly improve long-term outcomes for patients.
