Professor Qasim Aziz is a Professor of Neurogastroenterology. He started his career at the University of Manchester and after clinical training in general medicine and gastroenterology which led to the award of a PhD in 1996.
He held posts of Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, and Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Manchester, and is now Professor of Neurogastroenterology at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary, the University of London since 2006, and is the director of the world-renowned Wingate Institute of Neurogastroenterology.
Professor Aziz has obtained national and international awards for his research the two most important being the British Society of Gastroenterology Research Gold Medal and the American Gastroenterology Association, Janssen Award for Basic and Clinical Research. He has published approximately 200 original articles in reputed medical journals such as Nature Medicine, Nature Neuroscience, Lancet and Gastroenterology. He has made many pioneering discoveries, which include the identification of the brain centres for swallowing and abdominal pain. Role of psychological factors in influencing abdominal pain and has established a translational research programme aimed at understanding the mechanisms and treatments for visceral hypersensitivity (excessive sensitivity of pain nerves from the gut) which causes chronic abdominal pain. Recently he demonstrated an association between the joint hypermobility disorders such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and gastrointestinal symptoms in functional gastrointestinal disorders. Gut involvement in EDS remains an active clinical and research interest For Professor Aziz.
He also has an interest in gut manifestations in other systemic diseases, including connective tissue disorders such as Lupus and Scleroderma; neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and stroke; and endocrine diseases such as diabetes.
He lectures internationally on his areas of expertise.
