About Dr Nicholas Taylor
Dr Nicholas Taylor is a highly experienced Consultant Psychiatrist with 30 years of NHS service, including 20 years working in psychiatry and 17 years as a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist. He specialises in civil and criminal expert witness work and is commonly instructed in cases involving post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, adjustment disorders, depressive and anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and psychosis. Dr Taylor attended medical school in Bristol from 1993 to 1998, after which he gained broad clinical experience in General Medicine, General Surgery, Accident and Emergency, and Orthopaedics until 2001 when he entered psychiatry. He completed his psychiatric training (MRCPsych) and specialised in Forensic Psychiatry in Birmingham between 2001 and 2007 before taking up a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist post within the NHS in 2007. Over his career, Dr Taylor has worked extensively across low, medium, and high secure forensic psychiatric hospitals for more than 15 years. His clinical work has also included community forensic psychiatry, where he served as a regular visiting psychiatrist to Approved Premises, Category A and B prisons, and a Young Offenders Institution. Dr Taylor has also developed and delivered interventions for individuals affected by alcohol and substance misuse. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr Taylor has made significant contributions to medical education. He served as an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Birmingham, leading postgraduate training programmes for psychiatrists in the West Midlands, and also held Honorary Lecturer roles at the University of Liverpool. He has taught and examined at the University of Nottingham across undergraduate to doctoral levels in medicine, psychiatry, and psychology. Dr Taylor has provided in-house training for the HM Prison and Probation Service’s Mental Health Casework Section and has acted as an expert advisor to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. He played a leading role in a national team of senior forensic psychiatrists responsible for writing the current postgraduate training curriculum for Forensic Psychiatry in the United Kingdom.
