About
His clinical work focuses on the diagnosis and surgical management of retinal and cataract conditions. He treats a range of conditions including retinal detachment, macular hole, epiretinal membrane, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, retinal vein occlusion, vitreous haemorrhage, and ocular trauma.
Mr Kumaran completed his ophthalmic surgical training in the London deanery and undertook subspecialty training in vitreoretinal surgery. He was awarded a PhD from the Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Hospital for research into retinal disease. Following this, he led the first retinal gene therapy programme at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, treating patients with rare inherited retinal conditions.
In addition to his clinical work, he is involved in medical and surgical education and has trained ophthalmologists who have progressed to consultant roles in the UK and internationally. He was awarded Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in recognition of his contributions to teaching and training.
“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
