About

Mr Simon Richards is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon based in Bournemouth and Poole, Dorset, with a specialist focus on upper limb conditions. His clinical practice covers disorders of the hand, wrist and elbow, including arthritis, nerve compression syndromes such as carpal tunnel syndrome, Dupuytren’s disease, soft tissue lumps, and a wide range of traumatic injuries including fractures.

He qualified in medicine from The Royal London Hospital Medical School in 1992. He went on to complete his orthopaedic registrar training on the North-West Thames programme, with training based at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. He then undertook two specialist fellowships, one in Sydney, Australia, and another at the renowned Pulvertaft Hand Unit at Derby Royal Infirmary, further strengthening his expertise in hand and upper limb surgery.

He was appointed as a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in 2004 at Royal Bournemouth and Poole NHS Trusts, where he continues to practice. His surgical work includes both joint replacement procedures and arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery for upper limb conditions.

Mr Richards places strong emphasis on patient communication and shared decision-making. He prioritises thorough consultations, ensuring patients understand diagnosis and treatment options before proceeding. His approach focuses on evidence-based treatment, modern surgical techniques, and maintaining high standards of infection control, while also monitoring outcomes and patient satisfaction to support continuous improvement in care.

“Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions.”
