About Prof Nick Maynard
Professor Nick Maynard is a highly esteemed consultant Upper GI surgeon based in Oxford, with over twenty-five years of experience in his specialty. His NHS practice is based at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust (Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospitals) and his private practice is based at The Nuffield Health Manor Hospital in Oxford, his practise focussing on a broad spectrum of Upper GI conditions. His expertise includes the treatment of oesophageal and stomach conditions, as well as gallstones. Professor Maynard is particularly skilled in laparoscopic surgery for conditions such as hiatal hernia, achalasia, and reflux disease. He also has a large volume practice in revisional surgery for these conditions, aimed at correcting or modifying previous surgeries that did not achieve the desired results. As a leading figure in the field, Professor Maynard is especially adept in upper gastrointestinal laparoscopy and endoscopy procedures. He has significant experience treating adults with complications from trachea-oesophageal fistula (TOF) and oesophageal atresia, rare congenital defects involving the upper part of the oesophagus and the windpipe. He has a particular expertise in surgery for achalasia, based on nearly 30 years of experience. Professor Maynard has been a Consultant Upper GI Surgeon at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust since 1997. He was the Clinical Director for Surgery from 2008 to 2015, and served as the Director for Cancer Services from 2017 to 2022. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery at Oxford University. He graduated from the University of Oxford with a BA in Physiological Sciences in 1983, followed by his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery from Guy’s Hospital Medical School in 1986. He achieved his MS from the University of London in 1993 and his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1997. His training included various hospitals in south-east England and a 15-month period in Melbourne, Australia. In 2020, Professor Maynard was honoured with the FRCS Ed (ad hominem) by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, recognising his substantial contributions to upper GI surgery. He is the immediate Past President of the Association of Upper GI Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS), demitting in 2023, and was the Clinical Lead for the National Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit from 2015 to 2022. Beyond patient care, Professor Maynard is actively engaged in research on a wide range of Upper GI conditions. Professor Maynard has worked extensively in Gaza since 2010 teaching medical students and carrying out upper GI surgery. He has travelled out to Gaza regularly during the recent war providing humanitarian aid. He has recently been awarded the Humanitarian Medal by King Charles for his humanitarian work in Gaza.
