Mr Miles Duncan has been a Consultant Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon at the BMI Hospital, Lancaster, since 2017. Correction of facial deformity is his subspecialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, offering the full range of Orthognathic (Jaw corrective) surgery, including distraction osteogenesis. He spends much of his NHS time with management of facial trauma, being an important aspect of his weekly routine. He is also involved with removal of facial skin cancer and other facial skin lesions, and their reconstruction with local flaps or grafts. Mr Duncan also offers removal of lumps of the salivary glands, recently introducing minimally invasive salivary gland surgery (sialendoscopy) to the unit in Lancaster. Other services include investigations, including biopsy of oral or perioral lesions, treatment of oral ulcers and other mucosal conditions, and management of TMJ disorders. His oral surgery interests include implantology, sinus lifts and bone grafting, removal of wisdom teeth and complex dento-alveolar procedures.
Mr Duncan graduated with Honours, achieving a Bachelor of Medical Science from Dundee University in 1991 and then a Bachelor of Dental Surgery in 1993. He then worked in Scotland for several years gaining experience in the field of maxillofacial surgery before his acceptance to medical school at Guys, Kings and St Thomas', London graduating in 2001. After completing his basic surgical training in Accident & Emergency, General Surgery, Orthopaedics and ENT at Northwick Park Hospital, NW London, Miles undertook higher surgical training in Oral and Maxillofacial surgery in the North East of England, based at Middlesbrough, Sunderland and Newcastle and then on the South Coast, training at Brighton, Eastbourne and then at the Queen Victoria Hospital in East Grinstead, being awarded FRCS (Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery) in 2017. He is actively involved in the undergraduate and post-graduate teaching programmes at the University Hospital of Morecambe Bay. Mr Duncan is also an external examiner for Lancaster University Medical School admissions board.
