About Mr Michael Andrew Cass
Mr. Michael Cass is a Spinal surgeon based on the South Coast. He took up a Consultant post at Brighton & Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust in 2003. At the time he was the first Fellowship-trained Spinal Specialist at the Trust and since then he has strived to improve the profile of spinal surgery in South East England, introducing several new types of surgery, pioneering advanced techniques including minimally invasive (‘keyhole') surgery & kyphoplasty and developing the techniques of anterior lumbar surgery and lumbar disc replacement. He has a special interest in non-fusion treatment of spinal conditions. He was the only surgeon in South East England performing lumbar disc replacement. Mr. Cass understands that there may be situations where patients would like reassurance and guidance to help them understand both their condition and their treatment options. He offers a detailed but comprehensible explanation allowing a more thorough and inclusive decision to be made. Mr Cass has recently made the decision to step away from surgical management and focus on outpatient spinal care offering detailed consultations, diagnostic assessments, personalised non‑operative management plans, day‑case spinal procedures and independent second opinions. The majority of spinal issues can be managed without surgery and Mr Cass's previous conversion rate was around 12 - 15%. If open spinal surgery is required we can facilitate a referral to an appropriate specialist surgical colleague. Where requested, Mr. Cass can remain involved in your care, including follow‑up after surgery, to help guide rehabilitation and longer‑term management. Mr. Cass has a long‑standing reputation in Sussex and beyond for excellence in spinal diagnosis, clinical decision‑making and patient‑centred care. By stepping back from open surgery he is able to devote more time to thoughtful outpatient assessment and collaborative planning of the most suitable treatment for your condition.
"Evidence-based care tailored to each patient — taking the time to explain options and shared decisions."
