Matthew Torkington is a Consultant Surgeon in Trauma and Orthopaedics who works at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and BMI Ross Hall Hospital. His specialist interest is in all conditions of the hand and wrist.
Matthew initially qualified as a physiotherapist from Queen Margaret College in 1998 and worked for three years in the speciality, gaining experience in both in and outpatient rehabilitation. Following this Matthew commenced his medical degree at University of Glasgow, graduating in 2006.
He completed his foundation years in Dumfries and Galloway and the Western Infirmary Glasgow before beginning his specialist training in trauma and orthopaedics on the West of Scotland training programme. On completion of this in 2016, he then undertook a year long fellowship in Southampton with Professor David Warwick and Mr David Hargreaves to gain further post graduate specialist training in hand and wrist surgery. Matthew has been working as a Consultant in Glasgow since June 2017 dealing with all aspects of hand and wrist surgery and general musculoskeletal trauma.
Matthew's unique experience of working both as a physiotherapist and a surgeon gives him a wider perspective and knowledge of what treatment methods are most successful for specific problems. In particular, he understands that surgery represents just one aspect of treating conditions of the hand and wrist and that rehabilitation forms a significant component of management, with surgery performed only when indicated and at an appropriate time.
