Mr. Gerard (Ged) Smith is an accomplished Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, both medically and dentally qualified, and listed on the Maxillofacial Surgery specialist register of the General Medical Council.

He began his career in dentistry, before going on to study medicine. He trained in general surgery, emergency Medicine and orthopaedics before completing his higher surgical training in oral and maxillofacial surgery on the West of Scotland Rotation at Canniesburn.

Follwoing this Mr Smith has held substantive Maxillofacial Surgery Consultant Posts in Shropshire and Blackburn before moving to Northern Ireland as a Maxillofacial Consultant based at Altnagelvin Hospital in 2009. He retired from NHS practice in 2023 and currently works as a Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon bases at Kingsbridge NW.

His clinical expertise covers the full spectrum of oral and maxillofacial surgery, including conditions affecting the mouth and jaws, facial trauma, facial pain, salivary gland disorders, and the surgical management of benign and malignant facial skin lesions. He has a particular interest in the treatment and reconstruction of malignant lesions of the mouth and jaws along with the surgical excision and reconstruction of benign and malignant facial skin lesions.

In addition to his clinical work, Mr. Smith is an active educator working as the Higher Surgical Training Programme Director of the  Northern Irelandrotation and lecturing on topics such as head and neck cancer management, access surgery, microvascular reconstruction, salivary gland disorders, maxillofacial trauma, and surgical dermatology. 

Mr Smith, over the last 15yrs, has developed a special interest in the area of Aesthetic Medicine primarily focussing on the aesthetic application of botulinum toxin, tissue fillers and thread lift technology for facial rejuvination, currently undertaking clinics specifically for these procedures within the Kingsbridge Maypole Clinic in Belfast.
