About Mr Ian Sharpe
I am currently in clinical practice as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeon (specialising in disorders of the foot and ankle) at the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre (PEOC) in Exeter (NHS) and Exeter Nuffield Hospital (private practice). My clinical practice covers all of foot and ankle surgery - including arthroscopic work, sports injury treatment and lower limb reconstruction, with a tertiary referral practice in both trauma and elective cases. I am recognised as having expertise in primary and revision ankle replacement surgery, including use of 3-D printed cages and total talar replacements. I obtained a First Class Honours BSc( Inflammation and Neoplasia) in 1998.I qualified in medicine from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, University of London in 1991 and obtained my FRCS in 1995 and FRCS(Tr&Orth) in 2001 I undertook fellowships in Paediatric Orthopaedics in Sydney (2001) and in Foot and Ankle surgery in Seattle (2003). I established the Foot and Ankle unit at the PEOC in 2003, and was Lead Clinician from 2007 – 2021. The unit has now grown to include six consultants, a Fellow, Specialist Registrar and is supported by a dedicated ESP and SCP. I was Lead Clinician for Trauma from 2006 -2010 and was Clinical Director of the PEOC from 2014 – 2018. I was member of the BOFAS education committee 2017 – 2021 and continue to be involved in work within BOFAS and currently am involved in the BOFAS Advisory Committee which oversees Ankle arthritis networks (BOAST/GIRFT) and ODEP development for Ankle Arthroplasty l. I sit on the European Advisory Board for Ankle Replacements (Stryker) and am an Associate Editor of “The Foot” journal. I am invited speaker and national and international meetings.
